Kevin Pourier carves bison horns cast off by ranchers or meat packers, following his Lakota ancestors’ teaching to waste no part of the buffalo.

Monarch butterflies are a frequent subject. A traditional ceremony stirred his initial fascination with monarchs. But seeing a photo of Sitting Bull wearing a monarch butterfly wing in his hatband deepened Pourier’s respect for the power and beauty of these insects. Pourier’s efforts to alert the public to the plight of dwindling monarch populations earned him a “Monarch Hero” award from the World Wildlife Fund.
