The Hibiscus Gallery at Pinecrest Gardens is inviting visitors to don the latest Oculus headset and view Let’s Explore, Honoring the Future’s 360° virtual reality film about climate change. The film enables viewers to travel virtually to the far corners of the globe, under glaciers and atop coral reefs, to accompany scientists gathering evidence of climate change. The Newseum’s Chief Technology Officer Mitch Gelman observed, “There is no better media through which to tell this story – and this film does it exceptionally well.”

Also on exhibit will be 80.15 W, an exhibition of prints created by the gallery’s artist-in-residence, Xavier Cortada. Titled for Biscayne Bay’s longitude, 80.15 W features the 17 threatened and endangered species that call Biscayne National Park (in Miami, FL) home. In 2010, Cortada created the prints from drawings he had made on carbon paper, a metaphor for the impact (or “carbon footprint”) that humans have had on each animal, even across the boundaries of a protected nature preserve. The works were premiered at the National Park’s gallery and are in the permanent collection of Nova Southeastern University Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
